Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Department of Sport & Recreation’s Active Kids Holiday Calendar?
The Active Kids Holiday Calendar is a Department of Sport & Recreation initiative which showcases holiday activities in Western Australia for school aged children to participate in. It aims to provide free and widely publicised advertisement for event organisers as well as an easy way for children and parents to find fun and active events during the holidays.

  2. Do I have to pay for this service?
No. The calendar is free of charge to event providers and visitors alike!

  3. Does the Department of Sport & Recreation allow term time events on the calendar for advertising purposes?
No, the calendar is designed specifically for holiday programs. The only way that an event may be included is if it occurs during both term and holiday time. However the decision on whether to include the event is at the discretion of the moderator. Please note this is a change in previous policy for the calendar which allowed a number of in-term events in the past.

  4. Does the Department of Sport & Recreation allow non-sport & recreation events to be displayed on the calendar, even if they are holiday events?
No. We ask that any event that applies to be included has an active element to it. However if a non sport or recreation event does fulfil the ‘active’ criteria, we are happy to include the information.

  5. I have forgotten my password, what shall I do?
If you have forgotten your password then you are able to retrieve it easily yourself. This is done by using the login option on the left hand side and selecting ‘Password Re-set’. Here you will be asked to enter the email address that you registered with before clicking the ‘Reset Password’ option. You will be emailed a new password, which you will then have to change when you login.

  6. My event no longer appears on the site, where has it gone?
Once the date of your event has passed it will be removed from the calendar. However your details remain on the database. Therefore to add an event for a future holiday all you must do is log into your account, select ‘Add Event’ and enter the relevant details.

  7. Once my event has expired is the information retrievable?
Unfortunately once the event has expired and the details have been removed they can not be retrieved to be used again. This is a limitation of the site, but is an important element of the calendar as it creates a more user friendly site that is less cluttered. Please spend a few minutes entering your new data for each holiday period.

  8. How is the site advertised?
Prior to each holiday period the calendar has been advertised in a number of different ways. These include; postcards to every primary student, promotional posters, printed advertisements and media releases. Services providers are reached through email reminders and phone calls.

  9. How are the ‘Cool activities to try’ & ‘Have you tried’ events selected?
Both the ‘Cool activities to try’ and ‘Have you tried areas’ are selected completely at random by the program used to run the website and are usually changed depending on the number of activities in each section each time that the page is opened or refreshed. Each section is also accompanied by an explanation containing the benefits that taking part in active activities can have for children and adults alike.

  10. If my event falls into more than one of the ‘Sports’, ‘Active Arts’, ‘Aquatic’ or ‘Adventure’, in which category will it appear?
The good news is that the event will appear in each section that it is applicable to. For example, swimming events often appear in both the ‘Aquatic’ and ‘Sports’ sections. Each of the four sections has its own coloured spot which appears in the relevant colour or colours next to each individual event. For example a swimming event that appears in both the ‘Aquatic’ and ‘Sports’ sections will have both a blue and a red spot next to it.
